We live in a realm of three spatial dimensions. Some had speculated that entities once believed to exist, such as angels and demons, were really fourth dimensional entities. Such creatures entering our familiar realm would exhibit indescribable behavior. They would morph and change as they moved, seemingly defying our laws of physics. The only way for us to enter this fourth dimension, if it did exist, would be for a fourth dimensional beast to take us there, in which case we would experience a world of utter chaos.

Human beings have evolved the capacity to not only look upon our societies and study them, but to use that knowledge to engineer our own culture. Done properly, a society could create the requisite conditions to promote the advancement of its own members. The Judeo-Christian-Islamic superstition is a viral meme which has plagued humanity for thousands of years. It has caused good people and good cultures to perform atrocious actions. Inquisitions, Crusades, murders, genocides, witch hunts, infanticides, and countless other human evils have been perpetrated by those indoctrinated with these dogmas. These groups have also held society back from truth by destroying the Greek academies, burning the Library of Alexandria, and destroying invaluable texts from Asia, the Americas, Scandinavia, and others. The religiously infected have tried to keep science from illuminating reality since its birth, and continue to do so today. If we do not rise up and defend reason and freedom of mind, religion may succeed in its goal of putting us back into the Dark Ages.

Humans wish for reality to be ultimately unexplainable and filled with incomprehensible concepts. They come close to deep understanding and then coil away, for fear of losing the mysterious. They are able to ignore blatant truths in order to protect their inner vision and beliefs of reality. But some seek these truths, fiercely. For to them, the truth of reality is more valuable than any mystery.

Once a merging of consciousness and machine occurs, we will be able to exist without bound. Eventually we will have to move away from our solar system and travel around the universe in search of energy to fuel the computations of thought. It had been conjectured that as the universe expanded forever, an entity could exist eternally by cycling through periods of thought and stasis, at ever slower intervals. This would give the subjective experience of a smooth continuous consciousness to the entity, even though it would be asymptotically approaching a frozen death. Unfortunately, since matter-energy is not continuous but quantized, there would come a point where energy could no longer be halved, and the sleeping beast would no longer awake, making immortality infeasible in principle. However, a glimmer of hope may remain, as quantum mechanics tells us that a void can never truly be empty...

In 789 C.E., a small band of northern warriors landed off the coast of Lindisfarne where a christian monastery had been built. These warriors slaughtered the priests and monks, desecrated holy artefacts, and burned the monastery to the ground. There is a forbidden and dark alchemy in the nascent technologies of genetic engineering, nanotechnology, and Artificial Intelligence. In 1999, David and Robert formed the darkmetal band Winter Eternus. Over the years, Jarred, Cody, Leya, and others joined the group. During their reign the band produced a few songs, created a music video, and pulled off just one show. Over the years, the band faded as members went their own ways and pursued their own goals. But soon, out of the ashes there would rise a great phoenix...
In early 2004, Jarred and Robert found themselves in the Los Angeles area and eager to get back on stage. They decided to form a band with a new direction. Their musical philosophy was to write blackmetal thematically using the postmodern style familiar in movie scores, and embed their philosophies into their lyrics using the blackmetal lexicon. David, Cody, and Leya, old members of Winter Eternus, joined in despite their physical distance. They decided they needed a dedicated vocalist and Elijah was recruited.
After summoning up a few dark dirges, Praeter Caelestis had their debut show under a moonlit night among the trees and hills of central California. Soon afterward they recruited Matt as a second guitarist to complete their lineup. Finally able to do justice to their music live, they began playing shows in the Southern California and Nevada area. Early in 2005 they recorded and released their self produced demo, Ex Obscuritatem. They settled down in early 2007 to finish the material for their self produced debut album: Ghost of Gods. After many trials and tribulations, the album was finally finished and officially released on August 1st, 2008.
The members hold degrees in a variety of fields, ranging from Communication Studies and Digital Media Arts to Molecular Biology, Music, Sound Recording, Mathematics, English and Chemistry. With their eclectic expertise, Praeter Caelestis bring a dimension to blackmetal not found elsewhere. The band infuses concepts from the philosophy of mind, artificial intelligence, mathematics, biology, cosmology and physics into their songs, obscuring them with references to alchemy, kabbalah, magic, hermetic philosophy, and other mystical and occult themes. In addition to Praeter Caelestis, the members have many musical side projects ranging from tech death to industrial, dark wave, and electro. They have also brewed their own mead and absinthe.
